Roches Tower Lighthouse sunfish 1855

It is believed to be the heaviest specimen on record in Ireland weighing 1016kg (T.L. 2.4m & width 2.7m), was harpooned 16km off Roche’s Tower Lighthouse (Cork Harbour) on 14.09.1855 (The Illustrated London News, Saturday, September 22, 1855, Vol. XXVII, No. 762, p. 357 ) –compliments of Declan Quigley

2300+ kg sunfish

T.L. c3.6 m and width 2.4 m, was photographed by divers near the Maharee Islands (Brandon Bay, Co Kerry (Cork Examiner, 09, 2003) The maximum total length and weight given in Fishbase.com is 3.33m and 2300kg, respectively. The recent Maharee’s specimen (c 3.6m) would suggest that it was possibly the largest specimen recorded to date.
